What does it feel like to receive a chiropractic correction?
Discover what to expect from a chiropractic adjustment
Many of our new clients come in these days having seen #cracking videos on social media. Whether you enjoy watching these or if they turn you off, it is often easy to see the immediate sense of relief that is created in the person getting adjusted.
Correcting dis/un-ease (areas where there is lack of ease in the body) and cultivating ease in your body is the purpose of chiropractic care. Ease is the absence of difficulty or effort. This is the natural way the body functions: effortlessly. We have strayed quite far from our evolutionary ancestors’ way of life that often we can forget how simple health is supposed to be. Anyways, getting back to that state of ease can happen quickly or take quite some time. This is why we tell our clients that chiropractic care is a lifestyle. It’s not a single event like it’s depicted on TikTok. It’s an ongoing process of healing and optimizing performance.
So, just like your life has been filled with your own stressors, your own family and friends, your own job, your own habits, your own challenges, the way you respond to chiropractic care will be unique to you. What we do know, however, is in our clinic, a correction begins with analyzing your spine to locate areas of dysfunction. These areas are sometimes in your neck, your upper back, your mid-back, your low back, or your pelvis. Each of these areas require different positioning for you and for the doctor to specifically correct the problem. The chiropractor checks in with you to make sure you are comfortable. You may be lying face down on the chiropractic table, on your side, on your back, or sitting. It’s important to let the doctor know how you are feeling so that modifications can be made as needed. Once in the right position, the doctor uses their hands or sometimes a handheld instrument to momentarily apply a quick impulse to your spine.
When the impulse is applied, during positioning, or afterwards, you may hear a popping sound. While many people associate this as the intended effect of a correction, it is not. In fact, it merely represents gas bubbles that have been released in the fluid of the joints when the joint surfaces minimally move away and come back together. It does not imply a therapeutic effect.
Following the correction, the chiropractor checks that the function has improved. Most clients report to us an immediate sense of relief and well-being. Sometimes, especially earlier in their care plan, clients might feel a bit sore. Think of this as similar to going to the gym for the first time in a long while. When problems become chronic, they can take a lot longer to correct. But given enough time and repetition, things improve and get stronger and more resilient.
Honestly, there is no right or wrong way to feel after a correction. But, during the correction, you should feel calm and know that you are in a safe space. Some people are nervous before their first chiropractic correction, and that is ok. We are expertly trained to provide safe, effective care and answer any questions you might have. We never move forward until you are ready.
Everyone responds uniquely, but regular chiropractic care can feel great and become foundational to your healthy lifestyle. We look forward to helping you soon!
